Climate finance for Canadian exporters

Our Climate Finance Business Development (CFBD) program builds an international network of climate impact investors and connects them with Canadian exporters. It supports companies working to deliver climate change solutions in emerging markets and developing economies.

The CFBD program primarily aims to connect with Canadian exporters with sources of funding from:

  • international private donors
  • global impact investors
  • private arms of multilateral and regional development banks (such as the Asian Development Bank or World Bank)
  • international development agencies and development finance institutes (such as Finnfund, or Proparco)

We help you get financing for projects outside of Canada while encouraging Canadian investors to fund Canadian companies with climate solutions.

About international climate finance

We define climate finance as the global flow of capital into emerging markets and developing economies. This flow of capital targets projects that drive climate change adaptation and mitigation.

Climate finance investments are growing rapidly. At the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29), international leaders pledged to mobilize USD 1.3 trillion in public and private financing globally by 2035. We are here to help your business access these funds to expand internationally.

Sources of climate finance

We can help your business connect to various sources of climate finance.

International Financial Institutions (IFIs)

Companies leading climate projects may seek loans, grants, and equity investments from development banks and finance institutions such as:

  • The World Bank
  • African Development Bank
  • Asian Development Bank
  • Inter-American Development Bank
  • European Bank for Reconstruction and Development

These banks also fund sovereign lending programs subject to competitive bidding processes. We can support you in exploring these procurement opportunities through our IFI Procurement Program.

Private institutional investors and charities

Private impact investors from Canada, the United States, and Europe, as well as multilateral funds with blended finance facilities, invest directly in companies and projects.

Global foundations are also active in climate finance, providing grants and impact investments.
